ASALH 's 20th Annual Essay Contest
|
The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) proudly
announces its twentieth annual essay contest for undergraduate and graduate
students.
Essays may be submitted on any topic that explores the lives, history or cultures of
African descended people in North America, South America, the Caribbean, or
throughout the African Diaspora. A research approach is required; papers that are
only polemical and offer only personal opinions will not be accepted.
Essays should cite the appropriate primary and secondary sources related to the
topic under examination using endnotes and the citation style found in The Journal
of African American History, which uses The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition
(2003)
Essays will be judged by members of the ASALH Essay Contest Committee on the
basis of clarity, organization, originality, and documentation.
Each winner will be awarded $500 and have the opportunity to present their essay
at the 95th Annual ASALH Convention in Raleigh, NC September 29-October 3,
2010.
In addition to the monetary award, the Graduate Winner’s essay will be published in
an upcoming issue of The Journal of African American History (JAAH). In preparing
graduate student essays for submission back issues of the JAAH should be
consulted.
