The Critical Race, Gender, and Culture Studies Collaborative in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for a term faculty appointment in American Studies for Academic Year 2018-2019 at the rank of Professorial Lecturer. The appointment is a 9-month term position and will commence on August 27, 2018.

The American Studies Program offers a BA and a minor. The program is part of the Critical Race, Gender, and Culture Studies Collaborative, which also runs programs in African American and African Diaspora Studies, Arab World Studies, Asian Studies, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Applicants should hold a PhD, or an anticipated PhD completion by August 2018, in American Studies or other relevant field, and provide evidence of strong teaching skills. The position will require the incumbent to teach three courses per semester, including AMST-140, Washington, DC: Life inside a Monument (2 sections); AMST-240, Poverty and Culture; AMST-200, Introduction to American Studies; one upper-level course on U.S. civil rights history (broadly conceived), and one upper-level topics course depending on the candidates’ preference. In addition to teaching undergraduate courses, responsibilities include holding office hours, advising students, and participating in department, college, and university service activities. 

We especially welcome candidates with demonstrated experience teaching a wide range of American Studies courses (including core and methods courses) that deal with social justice, and have either a transnational focus or a focus on the study of Washington, D.C.  We also welcome candidates with expertise in fields such as, but not limited to, Latinx Studies, and/or Disability Studies.
