The Division of Archives and Records Management, Archival Services Branch is seeking an Archivist I who will assist customers with accessing public records. This position also carries out special archival projects such as processing collections of historic records from state and local government agencies, compiling inventories of archival holdings, and creating indexes and research guides to make these records more accessible by staff and the general public.
Job duties include:
- Performs in-depth research and responds to reference requests received via mail, email and telephone, using the resources of the State Archives. Explains the resources of the Archives to customers and suggests research options. Enters request information into the billing system to track requests, payments, and records used.
- Arranges, processes, and creates indexes for collections of records in the Archives Center, and creates new descriptive information for reprocessed records to improve access to those collections for staff and the public.
- Locates, retrieves and refiles original records in the Archives Center as requested by state agencies and circuit court clerks, and ensures that those unique and irreplaceable records are mailed out and refiled correctly. Locates, retrieves and refiles original records for onsite customers in the Archives Research Room.
- Picks up and transfers records from state agencies to the State Archives, using and completing the appropriate documentation, and advises agencies on the transfer process and the correct procedures for boxing records and creating transmittal forms as necessary.
- Provides reference assistance to onsite researchers in the Archives Research Room as needed by providing access to original paper records, microfilm, and online and other electronic formats.
- Participates in planning and organizing work projects in the Archives Center and in the Archival Services Branch. Assists in planning and preparing for workshops, seminars and conferences as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor’s degree in history, library science, public administration, social science or a related field.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: One year of professional archival experience in one or more of the following areas: reference, appraisal, description, preservation, or arrangement of documents.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: NONE
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Professional archival experience in one of the above areas will substitute for the education on a year-for- year basis.

Work is typically performed in a library setting. May be exposed to dust particles or other substances typically found in library settings which may require the following of safety procedures.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
