This month, we proudly feature Carla Stalling Walt This month, we proudly feature Carla Stalling Walter, a distinguished author, scholar, and advocate for the transformative power of dance. Carla’s most recent publication, Sacred Dance Meditations: 365 Globally Inspired Movement Practices Enhancing Awakening, Clarity and Connection, is an inspirational daily reader that taps into the healing powers of dance. Each entry offers a movement practice that promotes spiritual awakening, mental clarity, and deeper connection to oneself and the world. Carla’s passion for writing began at the age of 8, driven by her desire to help others through her stories. She has a rich academic background, having earned both a PhD and BA from the University of California and an MBA from California State University. In 2022, Carla served as the Martha Daniel Newell Visiting Scholar at Georgia College and State University. She’s held faculty positions and leadership roles across public and private institutions, from dean to chancellor. As a writer, Carla was a member of The Writer’s Clubs in California and the San Francisco Writer’s Grotto, where she also served as board chair. She has lectured on writing and publishing at esteemed organizations such as the Atlanta Writer’s Club, the San Diego Writers Ink, and the Georgia Writers Museum. On this day, March 7, 1965, “Bloody Sunday” sh On this day, March 7, 1965, “Bloody Sunday” shocked the nation—what happened on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, and how did Amelia Boynton Robinson play a pivotal role in this historic event? “Bloody Sunday” occurred when hundreds of peaceful demonstrators attempted to march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, to demand voting rights for Black Americans. As they crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge, they were brutally attacked by state troopers and sheriff’s deputies using clubs, tear gas, and whips. The violent assault, broadcast across the country, outraged Americans and fueled support for the Civil Rights Movement. Among the marchers was Amelia Boynton Robinson, a longtime voting rights activist and one of the march’s key organizers. She was beaten unconscious, and a haunting photograph of her lying on the ground became one of the most powerful images of the movement. Boynton Robinson had spent years fighting for Black suffrage, even running for Congress in 1964 as the first Black woman to do so in Alabama. Her courage and sacrifice helped lead to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, a landmark law that dismantled many barriers to Black voter registration. Amelia Boynton Robinson’s legacy continues to inspire the ongoing fight for justice and democracy.

Jesse Jackson is a prominent civil rights leader, Jesse Jackson is a prominent civil rights leader, minister, and activist who has dedicated his life to the fight for racial, economic, and social justice. A close associate of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., he emerged as a key figure in the civil rights movement, leading voter registration drives and advocating for economic empowerment in Black communities. In the late 1960s, he directed Operation Breadbasket, an initiative of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) aimed at increasing economic opportunities for Black workers. In 1971, he founded Operation PUSH (People United to Save Humanity), focusing on economic self-sufficiency, education, and civil rights. Later, he established the National Rainbow Coalition, expanding his advocacy to unite marginalized groups across racial and economic lines. Jackson made history with his presidential campaigns in 1984 and 1988, becoming the first African American to gain significant national support. His platform emphasized labor rights, healthcare, education, and anti-poverty policies. Beyond politics, he has played a vital role as an international mediator, negotiating the release of hostages and advocating for global human rights. His lifelong commitment to justice continues through the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, ensuring his legacy as a champion for equality and empowerment remains influential today. #ASALH #AfricanAmericansAndLabor #JesseJackson

Proclamation Honoring Mrs. Bessie M. JacksonThe Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) is honored to celebrate the 99th birthday of life member, Mrs. Bessie M. Jackson.Mrs. Jackson has been a fixture at many ASALH conferences. She has served as national secretary and is the New York state director, founder and former president of the Bronx Branch. A lifelong educator, she received a B.S. degree in early childhood education and a master’s degree in curriculum development from Columbia University Teachers College. Mrs. Jackson founded the NYC Day Care Workers Union Local 1707 while in college.Mrs. Jackson joined the NYC Board of Education as a first-grade teacher. After retirement she took on the roles of activist and founder of the African American History and Culture Center in the Bronx. She is also a poet, playwright, activist, and hosted the Smiling Through Tears talk show about racial injustice.Mrs. Jackson spearheaded the campaign that led to legislation establishing the second Monday in July as Abolition Commemoration Day in the state of New York which honors those who fought to end slavery. In 2020, at age 94 and after 16 years of advocacy, she witnessed the passage of this legislation.As we celebrate the 99th birthday of Mrs. Bessie M.
