On December 19, 2022, the St. Petersburg and Tampa Bay Branches collaborated to celebrate the 147th birthday of Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson, founder of the Association of African American Life and History (ASALH).

Hosted and guided by Fred Hearns, a local historian and Vice President of the Tampa Bay Branch, the group toured the Robert W. Saunders Sr. Public Library. The in-depth tour included perusing historical photos and artifacts of the Civil Rights Movement and the NAACP. They also toured the Central Avenue Walk, an area also known as the “Black Harlem of the South” which featured interactive audio and visual elements.

Additionally, the members toured the Ada T. Payne Bookstore purchasing books in support of its children’s educational program efforts.

Unified and further committed to the goals and visions of ASALH, the members concluded the birthday celebration at Al’s Soul Food Restaurant in historic Ybor City.
