Lafayette College announces a full-time, tenure-track position in the Africana Studies Program at the rank of assistant professor, beginning July 1, 2020, with specialization in contemporary African American life and culture, with expertise in questions of cultural identities and contemporary life in today’s U.S. black community. The successful candidate will be able to frame the study of African American communities in all their current complexities (historic pre-World War One communities, recent immigrants from the African continent, the Caribbean, etc.) while focusing on experiences peculiar to black communities that date from the antebellum period in the U.S. Applicants should have demonstrable competence in teaching, and would be expected to teach the introductory course in Africana Studies and other Africana Studies courses, such as Black Experience. Other possible courses that focus on black diaspora experience in the Americas, and other topics that reflect the candidate’s own research area would be expected over time. Expertise in teaching about mass incarceration and its effects would be valued. AFS requires applications from candidates with a doctorate (in hand or expected by August 2020). As an interdisciplinary program AFS encourages submissions from a range of departments and disciplines, notably sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, or human geography; but candidates are not limited to these. The teaching load is 2/2 in the first year, and 3/2 thereafter. Evidence of a promising scholarly trajectory in the applicant’s areas of expertise is expected. We are also interested in learning about the candidate’s current research program.
