Arkansas State University’s Department of History invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in African American history. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in African American and U.S. History and demonstrate an active research agenda that aligns with an R2 university. The successful applicant will also mentor students in the history major, African American Studies minor, History M.A. program (online and in-person), and interdisciplinary Heritage Studies Ph.D. program, as well as participate in recruitment and retention initiatives, and perform other service activities for the department, university, and community.

Arkansas State University is an R2 public research institution with roughly 19,000 students. Located in Jonesboro, AR, it is the flagship campus of the Arkansas State University System. Jonesboro has a population of 80,000 and is an hour away from Memphis and two hours from Little Rock.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Teaches 9-12 hours per semester
  • Mentor History majors, African American Studies minors, History M.A. students, and Heritage Studies Ph.D. students
  • Participate in the department’s General Education Curriculum
  • Participate in departmental recruitment and other events as needed
  • Other services for the department, the university, and the community at large
  • Teach courses in the online History M.A. program

Minimum Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in History or a related field (e.g., Africana Studies, American Studies, Heritage Studies, Public History, etc.) is expected by the time of appointment on August 16, 2026.
