In Memoriam: Ira Berlin
The Association for the Study of African American Life and History mourns the passing on June 5, 2018 of Ira Berlin, a giant in the historical profession and author of many books in the field of African American History. All scholars of the wartime experiences of African Americans recognize his tremendous contribution to the study of black life, labor, and military service during the Civil War years. We will ever be indebted to Ira’s founding of the heralded Freedmen and Southern Society Project and his mentorship of the many historians who worked with him to produce the volumes that are essential to understanding the greatest transformation of African American life in a time of war. ASALH extends its deepest sympathy to the family of our dear friend, mentor, and teacher.
