ASALH Greater Kansas City Area Branch Black History Study Group

March 18 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm CDT

In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Greater Kansas City Black History Study Group will feature Kansas City Star reporter, Ms. Mara Williams. Ms. Williams will discuss, “The Truth in Black and white: An apology from The Kansas City Star” which was published on December 20, 2020.

The published article acknowledged in a multi-part series, the role played by the Kansas City Star in reinforcing racism through its policies and practices, stating, “For 140 years, it has been one of the most influential forces in shaping Kansas City and the region. And yet for much of its early history – through sins of both commission and omission – it disenfranchised, ignored and scorned generations of Black Kansas Citians. It reinforced Jim Crow laws and redlining. Decade after early decade it robbed an entire community of opportunity, dignity, justice and recognition. That business is The Kansas City Star”.

Ms. Williams in dialogue with GKCBHSG President, Larry Lester, will discuss the factors leading to this epic apology and what the Black citizens of the Greater Kansas City area can expect moving forward as evidence of changes in practices and policies.
