ASALH James Weldon Johnson Branch Presents Painting to “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” Opal Lee

The James Weldon Johnson Branch of ASALH will present a painting by artist Laurence Walden to Mrs. Opal Lee on Sunday, September 26, 2021 at Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in Jacksonville, FL during the 10:30 a.m. worship service.

This event is open to the public and will also be on facebook live.

Opal Lee, born October 7, 1926 is an American retired teacher, counselor, and activist in the movement to make Juneteenth a federally-recognized holiday. She is often described as the “grandmother of Juneteenth.” On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed Senate Bill S. 475, making Juneteenth the eleventh federal holiday.
