February 21, 2021 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Join us for our annual Black History Month event, “Lillian Smith:  Anti-Racist Ally.”  Smith was an author and social critic whose writings  challenged white southerners to end segregation and actively fought to   dismantle Jim Crow with Dr. King and other Black activists. The documentary Breaking the Silence – Lillian Smith (2020, Dir. Hal and Henry Jacobs) will be available online one week before this event. Discussants for this day’s talk will include Professor Patricia Bell-Scott, Professor Emerita of Women’s Studies (UGA) and author of the award-winning  book The Firebrand and the First Lady: Portrait of a Friendship—Pauli Murray,  Eleanor Roosevelt, and the Struggle for Social Justice; and Professor Matthew  Teutsch, Director of the Lillian E. Smith Center, Piedmont College.
