Athens, Georgia, Branch, Carter G. Woodson’s Birthday
December 6 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Join us for our Carter G. Woodson Founder’s Month event: a virtual screening of the film Signing Black in America (Dir. Danica Cullinan and Neal Hutcheson, Films Media Group, 2020). This is the first-ever documentary about the innovative variety of sign language that was developed by members of the historically segregated African American Deaf Community. An online panel discussion will follow that features deaf and hearing producers and researchers for this film: Professor Carolyn McCaskill (Gallaudet University), Ciel Lucas, Professor Emerita (Gallaudet University), Professor Joseph Hill (Rochester Institute of Technology), and Professor Robert Bayley (University of California, Davis). If you enjoyed last year’s screening of Talking Black in America about the cultural impact of African American Language, you will enjoy this sequel which appeals to children, youth, and adults.
ALL EVENTS ARE FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
