The Sankofa Cinema Club usually meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month except for May\, November and December due to the holiday season. \nThe Sankofa Cinema Club showcases untold\, positive and accurate Black historical content within various aspects of life. The word Sankofa means literally “It is not taboo to go back for what you forgot (or left behind)” in the language Twi from the Akan tribe of Ghana. It also means if you forget and you go back to get it\, there is nothing wrong with it. \nWe will watch an enriching untold/hidden documentary and/or film together and have a fruitful and interactive discussion about it afterwards. I will try my best to get the filmmaker and/or related people to the content for a Q&A when possible. \nIn honor of Black Women’s History Month\, we are going to watch Move When the Spirit Move: The Legacy of Dorothy Foreman Cotton. \nDorothy Foreman Cotton was a bold and highly effective civil rights leader\, who educated thousands about their citizenship rights and inspired generations of activists with her powerful freedom songs. The only woman on Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.’s executive staff\, Dorothy was a charismatic\, courageous and consistently overlooked key player in the Civil Rights Movement\, whose freedom schools\, freedom songs and messages of empowerment are profoundly needed today. \nPlease note that the cinema club will be recorded which I hope is ok. This is a pre-cursor/prototype for my streaming service which will launch September 2026 (God’s willing). Just like most things\, you have to crawl before you can walk. It will establish engagement by such a valuable learning experience and community to see your lovely faces. Plus\, you can have bragging rights by saying you were behind the scenes of a digital platform to preserve such a treasure trove of hidden Black history which we all need to know. \nSpread the word to all of your circles to join us as we embark on learning about our hidden Black history together! The more the merrier! All are welcome! \nPlease log on ten minutes before 7pm: \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/87024437746?pwd=tp0qWLV7v6cbnxqVEYdt76Bv0iPP35.1 \nor use the QR code on the flyer \nWe all know how technology can have a mind of its own. We will start at 7:05pm. I am looking forward to seeing you and yours there. Thank you. \nFor more information\, contact bridgetysmith1@aol.com \nRegistration required \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Douglass and Gaylon Hoskins’fervent dream and vision– to restore the original Banneker School-the pinnacle of education for children of freed enslaved ancestors after the Civil War\, and to preserve historic Washington Chapel CME Church\, built in 1907\, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. \nMs. Sandra Lamb’s presentation\, “The Hidden History of the Black West”\, will highlight Black men and women whose labor\, skill\, talent\, and courage helped define western life. Their stories reshape our understanding of the West and reinforce a simple truth: Black history is American history.  “Popular images of the Wild West\, she shares\,  rarely reflect who was truly there”. \nNot only are GKCBHSG members continuously learning Black History\, but we are researching\, preserving\, teaching\, and making history in our respective communities.  These topics are bound to generate much discussion.  Engage with us as we continue our efforts to educate the Kansas City community about Black life\, history\, and culture in the face of ongoing efforts to erase and suppress Black history. \nFor more information\, contact kcblackhistory2@gmail.com[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Uses her research focus to recover the history of African American Civil War era women. She provides both professional lectures and living history presentations on this subject. This project capitalizes on the discovery of lesser-known works by African American women of the US Civil War era (1861-1865). Shining Stars documents\, an array of various types of fiction and nonfiction. One reviewer wrote “their writings provide a unique perspective on the trials and triumphs of the enslaved. Their texts also reflect their post-slavery politics\, spirituality\, and activism. This remarkable collection of documents enables users to acquire new information regarding African Americans that has traditionally been omitted. The project also provides extensive primary sources pertaining to the authors. Lewis Museum invites the community to gather in celebration under the theme “Juneteenth Brings Balance to America’s Celebration of Freedom.” Inspired by our upcoming exhibition “The Lines We Cross\,” this dynamic program explores how the story of freedom in America has been shaped by the lines we have drawn—and the ones we continue to cross.\nThrough history\, dialogue\, and cultural expression\, this celebration reflects on Juneteenth as a powerful moment that helps complete and rebalance the national narrative. By connecting the legacy of emancipation to the ongoing pursuit of equity\, the program invites visitors to consider how we each play a role in shaping a more inclusive and truthful understanding of freedom. \nJoin the Lewis Museum in a myriad of indoor and outdoor Juneteenth Freedom Activities to Include: \nJustice and Reconciliation: Film Screening and Panel Discussion\nThis film explores the influential lives of abolitionist Henry Highland Garnet\, a Civil War Chaplain and Harvey Johnson\, a civil rights pioneer and founder of the Brotherhood of Liberty.
