November 16, 2019 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm UTC-5
Civic Saturday ALBANY 1619-2019! is a community event commemorating 400 years of African American History that will honor the civic spirit and action of “The Albany Movement” at two Civic Saturday community gatherings on October 26, 2019 and November 16, 2019. The theme for the October event is, “Remembering the Spark of The Albany Movement” and the theme for the November event is, “Reflecting on the Triumph of The Albany Movement.”
The gatherings will involve civic reflection, connection, and inspiration through civic poetry, readings, songs/music, a talk, participants meeting & greeting, refreshments, and civic circles discussing ideas for community action using the Arts & Humanities to tell “The Albany Story of 1619-2019.”
Civic Saturday, a program that is being hosted in over 30 cities in the U.S. as a part of Citizen University, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit in Seattle, Washington, whose purpose is fostering a renewed sense of civic responsibility and citizen participation, is being hosted in Albany this year by ARTriumph Historical Society for The Artesian Renaissance with the Civic Saturday ALBANY Steering Committee to spur civic renewal through recognizing the contributions made by African Americans to democracy making and civic life. The Albany State University Lois B. Hollis Center for Social Equity in the Master of Public Administration Program is serving as a major partner.
