JUST: Living History Panel-Our Civil Rights Heritage | In-Person Event | May 3, 2026 | 2:30 p.m. EST, 3:30 p.m EDT, 1:30 p.m. CST, 12:30 p.m. MST, 11:30 a.m. PST
On Sunday afternoon May 3, our Savannah Yamacraw Branch historian, Dr. Otis Johnson, led a panel composed of four of Savannah’s civil rights leaders from the desegregation era. Other presenters on the JUST (Justice Unites Savannah Together) panel were Mercedes Wright-Arnold, Honorable Edna Jackson (member), and Jessie Collier Deloach. Otis set the tone with a foundational orientation of his experiences in the 1960s and 70s when Savannah was forced to desegregate. His personal experiences exposed the effects of racial segregation, from the heart of a little boy to a man who became Mayor in a city where Jim Crow did not prevail. Thank you, Mr. Mayor, for sharing your story and leading others in sharing their experiences. Job well done, Dr. Johnson. We look forward to more. Written by Dr. F. Gilyard, President Savannah-Yamacraw Branch
