SUMMARY:Commemorate 60 Years of Freedom Summer
DESCRIPTION:Sixty years ago\, there came from many quarters of our nation a youthful diversity of ethnicities\, opinions\, lifestyles\, and persuasions\, a cadre of risk-takers committed to lifting the last burden from the shoulders of the world’s last oppressed woman and man. Our coming together was more than idealism that has since been celebrated as the Mississippi Summer of 1964. \nWhile countless pundits and chroniclers from without have vertically described\, discussed and even extolled the seasonal events of that year\, this is the rare occasion\, some sixty years later\, for a horizontal view of those who survived to tell the story — it origins\, frustrations\, triumphs and its aspirations as well as hope. \nWith the doves outnumbering the ravens in the parliament of our hair\, this is our unbent and unbowed voice calling to those who must succeed us as radical agents of change. We want them to know that ours was more than theory and faith. It was more than uplifting rhetoric and freedom songs — It was pragmatic and tedious\, dangerous and deadly\, not only for us but more importantly for the locals who believed in us with their lives. May this passage of time reveal what the present once obscured. It comes as a special comfort to know that we were far better then than we could have ever known then. \nAnd it remains for our successors to become better than they can now foresee. \nWords crack and crumble under the strain of fully describing those 1964 days on paper\, but during these days of our assembly\, our authentic faces and voices can uniquely make history live and breathe and teach greater moral bandwidth for a new generation. The “nostalgia” of our being here once more together is more than the remembering of our old pain\, it is the memory of our collective possibilities as well to change the world.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series | Ayo Handy-Kendi: "Juneteenth Freedom Sagas: A Breath-Shop"
DESCRIPTION:Ayo Handy-Kendi \nExperience “Juneteenth Freedom Sagas\,” a one-woman\, in-person\, story-performance and “breath-shop\,” which re-enacts the ending of enslavement and liberation for American Blacks\, during D.C.’s Emancipation Day\, April 16\, 1862\, and Juneteenth 1865\, but also brings awareness to modern-day injustices. \nThe “story sagas” are intended for racial and diversity healing\, but are presented through the lens of enslaved men\, women\, and those who held them in bondage\, woven together by Negro Spirituals\, with audience participation. The program was created by Ayo Handy-Kendi\, internationally known as the “Breath Sekou and Storyteller.” Her performances have delighted and uplifted countless lives for over 30 years. \nAdded this year to the “saga” performances\, the audience is asked to explore their feelings in a compassionate technique\, which Handy-Kendi calls “silencing.” This method is a contemplative\, inner dialogue in which you meditate briefly on your feelings\, honor them by writing them down\, and on a sub-conscious cellular level\, breathe through them for deep release and effective reconciliation of present-day and inter-generational emotional trauma. \nAyo Handy-Kendi serves as the “Breath Sekou\,” a master teacher who has studied the breath\, holistic health\, personal and mental development\, and counseling since 1971. She specializes in breathology/breathwork for daily solutions and transformative practices that impact trauma\, stress\, wellness\, mental health\, and self-love for people of color. She has “breathed” with millions on radio\, tv\, print\, over the internet \, in private practice\, and on stage offering the life-changing tools of effective breathing. She is a steadfast advocate for the need for “PositivEnergy” to drive emotional resilience. She affirms that “when you breathe better\, you live better\, because as you change and transform your breath\, your PositivEnergyWorks”.
