DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nIn-Person Event | Starting November 4\, 2025 | 11:30 a.m. EST \nThe James Weldon Johnson Branch of ASALH Black History Freedom School started the Fall Term on October 4\, 2025\, for elementary\, middle\, and high school students. Time is 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. We continue to teach Black History to students\, and their parents are welcome to attend with them. The Black History 365 textbook is used and supplemented by material from our teachers. Local history is included. \nKey Components of Freedom Schools: \nCurriculum: \n\n\n\nElementary School: Introduces young students to key figures in Black history\, basic concepts of civil rights\, and African American culture. This can include stories\, arts and crafts\, music\, and age-appropriate discussions about fairness and justice.\nMiddle School: Builds on the elementary foundation by exploring more detailed historical events\, the Civil Rights Movement\, and contemporary social issues. Students engage in more critical thinking and analysis\, often through projects\, discussions\, and multimedia presentations.\nHigh School: Focuses on a deeper understanding of Black history and its relevance today. This includes studying primary sources\, conducting research projects\, and engaging in debates. High school students are encouraged to think critically about social justice issues and their role in creating change.\n\n\n\nMethodologies: \n\n\n\nInteractive Learning: Use of interactive and participatory teaching methods\, including group discussions\, role-playing\, and firsthand activities.\nCommunity Involvement: Engaging with the local community through field trips\, guest speakers\, and community service projects.\nCulturally Relevant Pedagogy: Incorporating students’ cultural references in all aspects of learning to make the curriculum more relatable and impactful.\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Manhattan Branch & Philadelphia Heritage Branch of ASALH Dr. Woodson's Annual Birthday Celebration - In the Spirit of Kwanzaa and Dr. Carter G. Woodson: Let the Circle Be Unbroken
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nLive Digital Event | December 11\, 2025 | 6:00 p.m. EST \nIn the Spirit of Kwanzaa and Dr. Carter G. Woodson: Let the Circle Be Unbroken \nIn celebration of the principles of Kwanzaa and the enduring legacy of Dr. Carter G. Woodson\, this program seeks to honor and preserve the living history of ASALH by engaging in intergenerational dialogue with our ASALH Elders. As part of our ongoing membership initiative\, elders will be interviewed by family members who will be invited to participate in this meaningful exchange. Prior to the session\, family members will prepare personal questions to ask their relative\, fostering reflection\, connection\, and storytelling across generations. \nBranch members will also guide the conversation by incorporating questions related to Dr. Woodson’s vision and the mission of ASALH\, ensuring that the discussion bridges personal legacy with collective purpose. Anchored in the Kwanzaa principle of Imani (Faith)—to believe with all our heart in our people\, our parents\, our teachers\, our leaders\, and the righteousness and victory of our struggle—this program reaffirms our commitment to preserving and celebrating African American history through the voices of those who helped shape it. \nFor more information\, contact us at manhattan.asalh@gmail.com[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
