SUMMARY:Manasota Branch of ASALH and The Bradenton/Sarasota (FL) Chapter of The Links Invite to: A Conversation about the Joy Goddess\, A'Lelia Walker/Book Signing Event
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nIn-Person Event | March 1\, 2026 | 6:00 p.m. EST \nDive into the life of A’Lelia Walker\, the Heiress of the Harlem Renaissance. \nA’Lelia Bundles will discuss her new book\, “Joy Goddess\,” and share the scintillating story of the pioneering glamour and cultural patronage of her great-grandmother\, after whom she was named\, the hair-care heiress and Harlem Renaissance socialite A’Lelia Walker. \nBorn in 1885\, A’Lelia spent her early years in poverty until her mother\, washerwoman Sarah Breedlove\, refashioned herself as Madam C.J. Walker\, purveyor of the Wonderful Hair Grower and the first female self-made millionaire in America. \nBringing A’Lelia out from under her mother’s shadow (during her lifetime\, she faced down unfavorable comparisons to her mother’s business acumen\, and the two had a contentious “fire and ice” relationship)\, Bundles shows that the heiress had a “gift” for” creating distinctive events” that “surprised even blasé New York.” \nA’Lelia hosted landmark soirées at her inherited Westchester County mansion and founded both the Walker Salon\, “one of Harlem’s most popular venues for private parties\,” and the Dark Tower\, a cultural salon named after a Countee Cullen poem\, “where her downtown friends joined her uptown friends.” A’Lelia’s guests\, cutting-edge musicians\, artists\, and poets\, to high-ranking African Americans in the federal government\, created a potent and unprecedented cultural mix. Langston Hughes called A’Lelia the “Joy Goddess of Harlem.” \nThe program will be moderated by Renee Gilmore\, host of Empowering Voices on ABC7 Sarasota. \nBooks will be available for sale and signing. \n\nDate:\nSunday\, March 1\, 2026\nTime:\n6:00 PM – 8:00 PM\nLocation:\nWestcoast Black Theatre Troupe\n1012 N. Orange Avenue\nSarasota\, FL\n\nHosted By:\nThe Bradenton/Sarasota (FL) Chapter of The Links\, Incorporated\nand The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH)\, Manasota Branch. \nAdmission:\nThis event is free and open to the public. \n\n \n \n \n\n [/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”RESERVE A SPOT” style=”flat” color=”juicy-pink” size=”lg” align=”center” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.eventbrite.com%2Fe%2Fa-conversation-about-the-joy-goddess-alelia-walker-tickets-1980837911516%3Faff%3Doddtdtcreator|target:_blank”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Greater Kansas City Black History Study Group Branch of ASALH Women's History Month Program
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nIn-Person Event | March 21\, 2026 | 1:00 p.m. CST \nOn Saturday\, March 21\, 2026\, at 1:00 pm\, the Greater Kansas City Black History Study Group will host its Women’s History Month Celebration at the Black Archives of Mid-America-1722 E. 17th Terrace-Kansas City\, MO 64108. The featured guest speaker will be Dr. Debra Foster Greene\, professor emerita of United States History at Lincoln University in Jefferson City\, Missouri. \nIn commemoration of Women’s History Month\, a period in the life of educator\, author and activist\, Anna Julia Cooper\, will be explored. “What does a 50-year-old Black female educator do when she is removed from her position as principal of the M Street School for African American children in Washington\, D.C.? This presentation answers this question by examining a four-year period\, 1906-1910\, in the life of educator\, Anna Julia Cooper. Considered the mother of Black Feminism\, Cooper called this period “her exile.” During eighteen months of her exile\, Cooper was employed to teach languages at Lincoln Institute in Jefferson City\, Missouri. Although documented in a single sentence in every writing of Cooper’s life and career\, her time in the Midwest was as active and engaged as the periods before and after.” \nIn her retirement\, Dr. Debra Foster Greene continues to write on topics related to African American history. She serves on local and state commissions\, including the Missouri Board on Geographic Names\, and the City of Jefferson Historic Preservation Commission. In addition to her historical work\, Dr. Greene is a certified economic developer and the owner of DL3 Consulting. \nPlease join us to learn more about the extraordinary life of Anna Julia Haywood Cooper! \n\n \n \n \n\n [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Henderson spent most of his childhood living in an integrated neighborhood in Washington D.C. But during the summer\, he stayed with his grandmother in Falls Church\, where she owned a general store and a small farm. It was during these summers that Henderson saw the stark difference between life for Black people in the city and rural Virginia. \nAfter attending Howard University and eventually Harvard\, Henderson earned a Ph.D. in athletic training and became the first Black man to become certified to teach Physical Education in public schools. His first experience in fighting for civil rights was in the field of athletics and as a teacher in D.C. public schools\, but he went on to become a local leader in Northern Virginia\, as well as a national champion of civil rights. SUMMARY:Stone Room Concerts @ Hill Center Featuring Eastern-European Jewish Folk Music with Seth Kibel & The Kleztet
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nIn-Person Event | March 29\, 2026 | 5:00 p.m EST \n\n\nSeth Kibel & The Kleztet will entertain and delight with a program focused on upbeat klezmer music (Eastern-European Jewish folk music) along with some detours into Yiddish folk song\, jazz\, swing\, and the Great American Songbook. Think the Brothers Gershwin\, Irving Berlin\, Jerome Kern\, Duke Ellington\, Benny Goodman\, and more! Seth and his band will have your toes a-tappin’ and make you want to dance in the aisles. Historical commentary (some of which might actually be true) and humorous anecdotes from Kibel will provide an insightful context for their selections. \nKlezmer\, which literally means “tool of song” in Yiddish\, is the secular folk music of the Jews of Central and Eastern Europe. In the first decades of the 1900s\, this music flourished not only in the Old World but also in the New\, in the immigrant community of New York City. There\, the sounds of the European “fiddler on the roof” mixed with the sounds of early jazz and Tin Pan Alley. The result was a quintessentially American sound. \nSeth Kibel is one of the Mid-Atlantic’s premier woodwind specialists\, working with some of the best bands in klezmer\, jazz\, swing\, and more. Wowing audiences on clarinet\, flute\, and saxophone\, Seth has made a name for himself in the Washington/Baltimore region and beyond. He is a featured performer with The Kleztet\, Bay Jazz Project\, Music Pilgrim Trio\, Daryl Davis Band\, The Natty Beaux\, and more. Winner of 28 Washington Area Music Awards (Wammies)\, including “Best World Music Instrumentalist” (2003-11) and “Best Jazz Instrumentalist” (2005\, 2007-8\, 2011-14). His most recent recording\, “Clown with a Stick\,” was released in May 2023 on the Azalea City Recordings record label. He’s won numerous prizes in the Mid-Atlantic Song Contest (MASC) including the Grand Prize in 2016 and a Gold Prize in 2022. When he’s not performing\, Seth lectures on music history for numerous institutions\, including the Osher Lifelong Learning programs at Johns Hopkins and Towson Universities. In addition to Kibel\, the band features  Sean Lane — piano\, Derek Wiegmann — double bass\, and Joey Antico — double bass. \nDavid Holiday\, a lifelong music aficionado \, founded Stone Room Concerts together with his wife in 2012 to bring intimate\, high-quality performances by local\, national\, and international independent musicians to the DMV area. He has curated and hosted well over 200 concerts over the past decade in his home\, churches\, and Hill Center. \n\n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”PURCHASE TICKETS HERE” style=”flat” color=”juicy-pink” align=”center” css=”” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hillcenterdc.org%2Fevent%2Fstone-room-concerts-hill-center-featuring-eastern-european-jewish-folk-music-with-seth-kibel-the-kleztet%2F%3Futm_source%3DHill%2BCenter%2Bat%2Bthe%2BOld%2BNaval%2BHospital%26utm_campaign%3D9788ea6eb3-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_1_31_2020_16_25_COPY_01%26utm_medium%3Demail%26utm_term%3D0_78c60040ef-9788ea6eb3-8482387%26mc_cid%3D9788ea6eb3%26mc_eid%3D005ab565e8|target:_blank”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
