Savannah Yamacraw Branch, Savannah Georgia, “Carter Reads the Newspaper” – Reading to Middle School Students
December 8, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm UTC-5
Members of the Savannah Yamacraw ASALH Branch celebrated Dr. Woodson’s birthday on Tuesday, December 8, 2020, by reading to middle school students. The branch chose “Carter Reads the Newspaper,” by Deborah Hopkinson (illustrated by Don Tate) to read to a class at Georgetown K8 School. The books is described as the first-ever picture book biography of Carter G. Woodson, the Father of Black History Month
Three branch members, Ms. Shevon Carr, Dr. Lemuel Patterson and Mrs. Wanda Lloyd, divided the book into thirds and read virtually to the class. The branch provided questions in advance to Ms. Judith Tenney, the class’s teacher and those questions were used for discussion at the end of the reading.
The Program Committee, which planned the event, provided a PowerPoint to go along with the reading in order to have visuals for the event.
The reading for Ms. Tenney’s class was a live virtual event, and the recording will be shown to other middle school classes in the Savannah Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS). Ms. Tenney responded the next day with this feedback: “I am so thankful for the experience you provided to my class! They loved it and so did I. Please contact me with information about any upcoming events as I am very interested in participating.”
Mrs. Carolyn Blackshear is president of the Savannah Yamacraw ASALH Branch.
