Join us for a special discussion this Wednesday, September 10, 2025, that traces Deanwood’s history through the story of Isaac and Mary Scott—the African American couple who managed Woodrow and Edith Wilson’s household on S Street. Their Deanwood home remains a testament to Black architects, community strength, and the pursuit of the American dream. Deanwood is one of the oldest African American communities in Washington, D.C.—a neighborhood where generations have built lives, legacies, and resilience. Together, we will explore Deanwood’s past, the challenges of community preservation, and the future of African American homeownership in Washington, D.C.
Featuring guest speakers:
Edith Michel – Museum educator and preservationist
Michelle A. Jones – Historian of Black architects in DC
Dr. Robert Cosby – Howard University director and professor
Mara Cherkasky– Historian of D.C.’s racial past
