“The African Presence in America Before 1619: A Symposium for a New Narrative”

The symposium is an effort to expand the narrative about people of African descent in America by discussing the African presence in the contiguous U.S. before 1619. African people were in Florida at least a century before 1619. Themes that will be covered include: African peoples, origins, cultures, survivals; free and enslaved African populations; alliances with Indigenous peoples; and resources for further inquiry. The event is free and open to the public
