The Athens, GA Branch, COVID-19 Response Project
April 14, 2020
The Athens, GA Branch has created an ongoing service project as a response to the COVOD-19 pandemic that also addresses this year’s theme, African Americans and the Vote. They have prepared and distributed packets that each contain a cloth mask (courtesy of theatre design students at the University of Georgia and other volunteers), a small bottle of hand sanitizer, a bar of soap, a small packet of wipes, and a small packet of tissues. The “response packet” also contains a letter from the Branch with a postage stamp included that urges the recipient to register or vote by mail. So far, packets plus additional masks have been distributed to the food bank at First A.M.E. Church and to a community service organization, the East Athens Development Corporation. Approximately 200 people have been served so far. The logistics of collecting, collating and distributing the materials while maintaining social distance proved challenging at first, but became routine. The Branch would like to extend special thanks to our Program Committee for coordinating our efforts.
