Indeed\, work is at the very center of much of Black history and culture. Be it the traditional agricultural labor of enslaved Africans that fed Low Country colonies\, debates among Black educators on the importance of vocational training\, self-help strategies and entrepreneurship in Black communities\, or organized labor’s role in fighting both economic and social injustice\, Black people’s work has been transformational throughout the U.S.\, Africa\, and the Diaspora. The 2025 Black History Month theme\, “African Americans and Labor\,” sets out to highlight and celebrate the potent impact of this work.\n[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″][vc_separator color=”white” css=””][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_btn title=”LEARN MORE ABOUT THE ANNUAL LUNCHEON” style=”outline-custom” outline_custom_color=”#F55208″ outline_custom_hover_background=”#F55208″ align=”center” css=”” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fasalh.org%2Ffestival%2F”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″][vc_separator color=”white” css=””][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator color=”custom” accent_color=”#3b7f9c”][vc_custom_heading text=”TICKETS ARE SOLD OUT” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:48|text_align:center|color:%23F55208|line_height:1″ google_fonts=”font_family:Roboto%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C500%2C500italic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:900%20bold%20regular%3A900%3Anormal” css=””][vc_column_text css=””] \nOnline ticket sales are closed. SUMMARY:ASALH Greater Kansas City Black History Study Group Branch Black History Month Program
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, February 22\, 2025\, at 1:00 pm\, the Greater Kansas City Black History Study Group held its annual Black History Month Program. The program featured Buffalo Soldier Historian\, Jay M. Collins\, who currently serves as President of the Buffalo Soldier Mounted Calvary Unit\n(BSMCU)\, founded in 2014 in California. Collins’ presentation addressed the historical contributions of the Black soldiers who helped to\nbuild America and settle the Western frontier. He discussed Military\, Western\, and Buffalo Soldier History\, including the theories on how the regiments became known as Buffalo Soldiers. \nThe Buffalo Soldiers (six all-Black cavalry and infantry regiments) were created in 1866 after Congress passed the Army Organization Act. Collins explored the soldiers’ roles in protecting settlers\, stagecoaches\, wagon trains\, and railroad crews on the Western frontier. This\nwestward expansion sometimes placed them in conflict with Native American populations whose lands were being confiscated. The study of the Buffalo Soldiers continues to provoke conversations about their complex and storied legacy. \nRetired from a law enforcement career with the LAPD and the LAXPD\, Collins shared highlights from parades and other activities of the BSMCU\, which works to preserve the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers. Members of the local Alexander/Madison Chapter of the KC Buffalo Soldiers were also in attendance and added to an engaging and informative discussion.
