SUMMARY:100 Quilts for 100 Years of Black History Month Celebrations
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nIn-Person Event | February 2026  \nAfrican American Sewcial Threaders Quilt Guild presents: Black Resilience: The Underground Railroad and Beyond 100 Quilts for 100 Years—A Portrait of Black History \n2026 marks the 100th anniversary of Black History Month\, which began in 1926 as “Negro History Week” by Dr Carter G. Woodson\, president of The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH)\, which is the founding organisation. The national theme for 2026 is “A Century of Black History Commemorations”. \nAs an homage to the 100th anniversary of Black History Month\, the Sewcial Threaders Quilt Guild is presenting an exhibit of 100 African American historically themed quilts. This may well be the largest gathering of African American quilts in one location in the state. \nOur theme explores the strength and determination of Black people in the face of adversity. While some quilts highlight the Underground Railroad\, slavery and freedom\, others focus on the strength and resilience of our ancestors. Afrocentric fabrics highlight the legacy and impact of Africa on Black culture. \nWe have also invited members of the Churchland Library Quilt Guild and the Hampton Fellowship Quilt Guild to participate in our grand celebration. \nThe 100 quilts will be on display throughout February at the Chesapeake\, Virginia Central Library. The African American Sewcial Threaders Quilt Guild strives to spotlight\, share\, encourage and preserve the art of quilt making. \nFor more information\, please contact Dr Janice Sims Johnson\, President\, at 412-596-8713[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Organizing Northern Virginia Branch of ASALH: Lucasville School Open House
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nIn-Person Event | February 1\, 2026 | 11:30 a.m. EST \nJoin branch members at the Lucasville School Historic Site to kick off African American History Month at Prince William County’s historic sites. Visit the reconstructed 19th-century school used by the community of Lucasville and learn about Prince William’s African American history after the American Civil War. \nContext: \nAlice A. Taylor taught for fifteen years at Lucasville School from 1910 to its closure in 1926. Who was the woman who shaped so many young lives? She was born to Charles and Alice Woodford in Caldwell County\, Kentucky\, in December 1859\, when her parents were slaves to a man named James Woods. Her father served in Company G\, 6th US Colored Cavalry during the Civil War’s last year. Afterwards\, the family grew to include nine children and resided in Winchester\, Kentucky. \nKnown to her family as Anna\, to differentiate from her mother Alice\, she attended the integrated Berea College beginning in 1886\, where she attained a teacher’s degree specializing in science. There she met her future husband\, William C. Taylor. They married after graduation in 1890. Both Taylors taught in one-room schools in Kentucky before William took a job at the Manassas Industrial School\, and Anna taught at Lucasville. She passed away at age 71 in 1932 and was buried at home in Kentucky.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Black History Month at All Souls - Black Souls Presents: Book Talk with Dr. Amber Wiley and "To Live Free" with Rev. Anastassia Zinke
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nIn Person Event | February 1\, 2026 | 12:30 p.m. EST \n\nBlack Souls Presents: Book Talk with Dr. Amber Wiley – Model Schools in the Model City: \nJoin us for a book talk with Dr. Amber Wiley\, who will discuss her new book\, Model Schools in the Model City: Race\, Planning\, and Education in the Nation’s Capital. Dr. Wiley explores how race\, urban planning\, and education have shaped Washington\, DC\, and what that history means today. \nTo Live Free | Rev. Anastassia Zinke \nThis service launches Black History Month through the moral vision of Bryan Stevenson and the Equal Justice Initiative. They call us to tell the truth about racial injustice – from enslavement and segregation to mass incarceration – not as distant facts\, but as living realities that shape whose lives are protected and whose are treated as disposable. We will reflect on justice as a spiritual practice: staying close to suffering\, refusing despair\, and believing in transformation. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
