A homecoming to restore dignity
A memorial service was held in New Orleans over the weekend to celebrate the return and burial of 19 African Americans whose skulls were sent to Germany for racist research practices in the 19th century.
ASALH members such as Freddi Williams Evans, Dr. Jana Meyers Smith, Leon Waters, and Dr. Eva Baham of Dillard University were on the planning committee. The Charles Deslondes Branch of ASALH also served as the official ushers at the service, with Branch President Malik Bartholomew serving as Head Usher. Members Kendrick J. Perkins, Kelley Hines, Dr. Javian Baker, and Tiffany Guillory served as ushers with the Congo Square Preservation Society members. The Charles Deslondes Branch of ASALH and the Congo Square Preservation Society were the only two organizations that served as the official ushers for the event honoring The Nineteen.
