The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, founded in 1992 and inspired by Rev. Fred L. Shuttlesworth, a bold, charismatic minister who used his pulpit to forcefully protest Jim Crow segregation despite three dynamite attacks on his church, is an educational, cultural and research center that is not only a local history museum but also part of the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument established on January 12, 2017 by then President Barack Obama to be part of the National Park Service and to celebrate, in perpetuity, the heroism of those who worked so hard to advance the cause of freedom. BCRI’s mission is “to enlighten each generation about civil and human rights by exploring our common past and working together in the present to build a better future.”
