The Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities (LEH), a statewide non-profit organization dedicated to providing educational opportunities to all Louisianans is looking for an inaugural Director of The Helis Foundation John Scott Center (THFJSC). The Director is a member of the LEH leadership team responsible for planning and executing all public programs tied to THFJSC. The Director will supervise Center staff and establish the Center as a cultural and educational destination in the city of New Orleans dedicated to the life, work, and legacy of artist John T. Scott. The Director will be a dynamic and visionary leader who is able to articulate the significance of Scott’s work as well as the Center’s vision and goals to diverse constituencies while building the Center’s audience and establishing strategic community partnerships. The Director will be someone who values the power of collaboration both within the LEH and with community partners and embraces the role of directing a cultural institution situated at the crossroads of the arts and humanities. Working within the Public Programs division of the LEH, the Director will report to the VP of Public Programs, oversee a staff of two, and be actively engaged in the planning, cataloging, interpretive, and installation work needed to achieve an early 2022 Center opening date. The Director will also work with the LEH’s institutional advancement team to ensure the long-term financial stability of the Center through grant writing, donor cultivation, and other fundraising activities.

The ideal candidate will have proven experience in intermediate project management skills. The THFJSC Director must have creativity and passion for creating meaningful learning and cultural experiences, be organized, and have excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year university in a humanities or museum field is required.
• Master’s Degree is preferred.

• Minimum three years of experience working in museums or cultural centers within departments dedicated to curation, programming, education, or outreach.
• Community building around arts and humanities themes, initiatives, and/or programs.
• Superior writing and communication skills.
• Superior organization and project management skills.
• Proven success in a project coordination role.
• Experience with budget management and grant writing.
• Prior nonprofit experience is preferred.

• Ability to serve as an ambassador for the Center across New Orleans and beyond.
• Ability to build, guide, and lead all areas of planning, promoting, and executing programming and outreach for the Center.
• Understanding of visitor segmentation and personalization.
• Ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the LEH and as well as with external stakeholder and constituent groups, including donors, artists, scholars, students, teachers, and members of the general public.
• Technologically savvy and well versed in Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
• Established skills to work collaboratively with internal as well as external partners and other organizations.
• Broad knowledge of current museum and community engagement best practices.
• Extremely versatile, dedicated to efficient productivity.
• Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and dedication to the mission and values of the LEH.

• Knowledge of African American history and/or art history, particularly of the 20th century.

• Become knowledgeable about the life, work, and legacy of artist John T. Scott and be prepared to share that knowledge with stakeholders and diverse constituent groups.
• Assist in articulating the mission, vision, and values of the Center.
• Assist in creating and implementing the Center’s operating plan.
• Work with the VP of Public Programs to establish a long-term collections management plan.
• Serve as a community ambassador for the Center, establishing and nurturing a broad network of community support and strategic partnerships, leveraging shared resources, cross promotion, and creative programming.
• Establish and execute a plan for targeting and increasing visitation among specific audiences, including teachers and students as well as members of the general public and tourists.
• Establish and implement a programmatic vision and budget for Year 1 of the Center’s operations.
• Prepare and/or supervise preparation of exhibition interpretation materials, including gallery notes, family guides, visitor comment books, and other related visitor materials in close consultation with exhibition curator, VP of Public Programs, and marketing director.
• Develop and execute a measurable plan for tracking audience engagement, visitor attendance, and audience evaluation.
• Develop educational programming to reach a broad range of audiences in line with shifting needs of Louisianians.
• Plan, implement, and evaluate all on-site and off-site programming for general audiences that is mission driven, fiscally sound, and audience responsive.
• Manage and attend community outreach events.
• Support and coordinate offsite outreach work for THFJSC, including traveling exhibits.
• Manage and direct day-of operations for all public programs, including operational support for events and programs.
• Oversee collections care and installation/deinstallation of exhibitions.
• Analyze visitation trends and report out to stakeholders.
• Monitor Center financials and ensure adherence to Center budget.
• Hire, train, schedule, and supervise Center staff, interns, and volunteers as applicable.
• Assist Institutional Advancement division with general fundraising activities, including providing relevant programming data and program-specific content for grant and sponsorship proposals and reports to assist fundraising efforts.
• Thoroughly understand LEH’s mission and values and how they connect to the mission and values of the Center.
