The Journal of African American History Editor Search

The Association for the Study of American Life and History (ASALH) is launching a search for Editor of The Journal of African American History (JAAH).  The official date of the appointment starts in the fall 2018.  The JAAH Editor Search Committee, chaired by Martha Biondi and Brenda E. Stevenson, seeks candidates with the following qualifications:

  1. A senior professor with a distinguished publication record in the field of African American history and/or African Diaspora Studies
  2. Prior editorial experience as a member of a scholarly journal’s editorial board or guest editor of JAAH, or another scholarly journal or publication
  3. Institutional support for JAAH including (but not limited to) office space and graduate students or staff assistant(s) to serve as Editorial Assistants for the duration of the editorial appointment (3 -5 years)
  4. Availability to start during the transition period by working with Editor V. P. Franklin in the fall of 2018.

The Editor’s ongoing activities include (but are not limited to):

  1. Assigning submitted papers to the appropriate Associate Editor
  2. Reading reviews and manuscripts to ensure quality and technical accuracy
  3. Writing editorial decision letters based on the reviews
  4. Communicating regularly with the Managing Editor and other staff members to plan future issues, develop the issue cover, and discuss organizational issues
  5. Deciding which manuscripts will be published

Nominations package should include the following documents:

  1. Statement of interest including qualifications for the position
  2. Vision statement for the Journal
  3. Current curriculum vita
  4. A letter of financial commitment from his or her department, college, and/or university
  5. Name and contact information of three references (contacted only if the candidate is selected for an interview)
