Join with a National Park Service Ranger (Steve Phan) on Saturday morning, March 16, 2019, for an exploration of Fort Slocum. This fort witnessed the dramatic intersection between slavery and freedom during the war as thousands of formerly enslaved African Americans came across Federal lines. Fort Slocum was also engaged in enemy action during the Civil War; along with Fort DeRussy and Stevens. It was a major sector of fighting during the Confederate Raid on Washington DC in July 1864, culminating in the Battle of Fort Stevens.
Meet Ranger Phan at Fort Slocum Park, located at 5800 Kansas Ave NW, Washington, DC 20011 on March 16th from 10:00 – 11:59 a.m. The 1.5-mile hike and will be conducted over paved sidewalks, dirt paths, and grass.
