The Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture in Williamsburg, Virginia, invites nominations and applications for the position of Executive Director, to be filled on July 1, 2022.
The director is the chief administrative officer of the Institute. Institute programs include publication of the William and Mary Quarterly; publication of books and documentary volumes; postdoctoral fellowships; graduate-level training in historical editing; and conferences and seminars. William & Mary, which shares in its governance, assisted by a Board of Directors and an Advisory Council, sponsor the Institute. The director, who reports to the university’s Presidential Liaison for Strategic Cultural Partnerships, works with a nineteen-member staff, plus research fellows in residence and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, with support from members of the Board of Directors and the Council, to administer Institute operations and conduct all Institute scholarly programs and fund-raising activities. Qualifications of the director include a doctorate in an appropriate field; a record of scholarly accomplishment; and experience in an academic institution, learned society, or other historical organization, or a manifest aptitude for such duties. Depending on qualifications, the director may be appointed to a concurrent tenured position on the faculty of William & Mary with some teaching responsibilities or to an administrative appointment with affiliate faculty status. The director will have access to a team of colleagues leading other prominent university units including the Muscarelle Museum of Art, James Monroe’s Highland, and the Bray School Lab.

The position is a twelve-month appointment. Salary and benefits are commensurate with experience and qualifications.
