Major Duties

  • Teach 9 credit hours of courses in African American and African Studies (AAAS) per semester, including required and/or elective AAAS  and for WMU Essential Studies courses.
  • Teach 3 credit hours per semester within the Department of History in African American history.
  • Serve for 3 credit hours as the associate director for the Institute for Intercultural and Anthropological studies assisting the IIAS director  with coordination of AAAS course offerings, and leading curriculum development and assessment for the AAAS program and AAAS WMU  Essential Studies courses.
  • Contribute toward Institute Activities such as student recruitment and advising, as well as organizing extra-curricular programming  relevant to the program (e.g. inviting outside speakers, collaborating with the community).
  • Contribute service as appropriate to both the Institute for Intercultural and Anthropological Studies and the Department of History. – Other duties and service as assigned by the units’ directors.
  • Scholarship activity complementary to teaching is desirable.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in history or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years teaching experience at the college level as the instructor of record.
  • Experience coordinating within a general education program.
  • Teaching expertise in African American and African history.

Desired Qualifications

  • 2 or more years of experience serving as an associate director or chair of an African American Studies or History program or  department.
  • Teaching expertise in apartheid in South Africa and forms of Black consciousness.
  • Experience developing, teaching and assessing general education courses.

This is a joint-appointment position with the Department of History. Duties will be shared across both the Institute for Intercultural and  Anthropological Studies and the Department of History.
