The fellowships, in the amount of $3000 each, are awarded annually to doctoral candidates, college and university faculty at every rank, and independent scholars working in the field of American history. The fellowships support research at archives in New York City, including the Gilder Lehrman Collection, the New York Public Library, the Schomburg Center, the New-York Historical Society, and the Columbia University Libraries. Since 1994, the Gilder Lehrman Institute has awarded a total of 653 fellowships.

Any interested candidates can submit their application materials online at https://www.gilderlehrman.org/content/fellowship-application-form or can send them by e-mail to fellowships@gilderlehrman.org. These should include a brief 2−5 page project proposal with a list of primary sources to be consulted and an anticipated budget; a curriculum vitae; and two letters of recommendation from established scholars. The deadline for applications is Monday, May 13, 2019.
