I Am Woman

Dr. Latorial Faison

Nearly 163 years after Sojourner Truth delivered her famous, “Ain’t I a Woman,” speech at the Women’s Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio, poet, author, educator, and military spouse, Latorial Faison, delivered her poignant poem, “I Am Woman,” Saturday, March 22, 2014, at military event celebrating Women’s History Month on Yongsan Army Base in South Korea to an audience of U.S. enlisted and commissioned officers, spouses, and civilian government employees.

I Am Woman prolifically and lyrically captures the plight of women. Faison poetically highlights women trailblazers in history and pauses to remember their significance and struggles. The poem, like Truth’s 1851 speech, celebrates womanhood, honors the achievements of women, and brings to memory those who have individually and collectively paved the way for all women. “I Am Woman” is a testament of strength, unity, and courage toward a more appreciated womanhood.
