Manager of Student Learning

Purpose:
Develops and manages the daily operations of onsite, offsite, and digital student programs for the Thomas Jefferson Foundation. The Manager of Student Learning will take the lead on maintaining, developing, and evaluating programs for K-12 students and will serve as an advocate for student audiences. The manager will assist in the hiring, training, and evaluating of guides and collaborate with other managers and the Director of Education and Visitor Programs in long-term planning and implementation of interpretive programming. They will also be the direct manager of a portion of the Monticello guide staff.

We will look to you to:
Develop onsite and digital programming ideas based on target audiences’ needs and interests and on TJF’s strategic priorities, including civic education.
Manage onsite, offsite, and digital student programs.
Maintain records documenting the level of success of the programs, including number of attendees, evaluations, and photographs.
Plan and maintain budgets for student programs in coordination with the Director of Education and Visitor Programs.
Advocate for the needs of student learners across all aspects of the onsite and digital guest experience
Assist the Administrator of Teacher Learning with teacher outreach and professional development, such as the Monticello Teacher Institute and teacher conferences.
Assist in hiring, training, and evaluating interpretive staff.
Directly manage approximately one-third of the Monticello guide team (10-20 interpreters)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Graduate degree in related field or extensive work experience expected, including several years of experience in interpretive program management and/or supervision of staff. Background in museum education, teaching certification and/or classroom teaching experience preferred.
Solid foundation in American history and knowledge of site-specific content relating to Jefferson and those who lived at Monticello
Excellent public speaking skills
Excellent writing skills
Demonstrated understanding of pedagogy and proven ability to develop innovative in-person and digital educational programs and materials that meet the needs of diverse student learners.
Extremely proficient at using standard Microsoft Office software such as Outlook, Word, and Excel
Ability to model TJF’s customer service standards and expectations
Experience in giving affirming and corrective feedback
Ability to handle unexpected and rapidly changing situations

Physical Demands and Work Considerations:
Some weekend, holiday, and evening work required
May need to work outside in extreme weather conditions.
Works at a computer for extended periods of time.
Monticello is located on a mountaintop. Must be able to walk on rocky, uneven ground, and be able to walk up steep inclines.
Will perform outreach in a variety of venues off-site from Monticello, including occasional travel out of state
Monticello has multiple “campuses.” Frequent driving to these locations is required.

Salary Range $60,100 – $67,600.
