Posted @withregram • @400yaahc Carter G. Woodson Posted @withregram • @400yaahc Carter G. Woodson, often hailed as the ‘Father of Black History,’ was a pioneering historian, educator, and activist whose tireless efforts transformed how African-American history is understood, celebrated, and integrated into the broader narrative of American history.

📚 Woodson had a challenging childhood, but his unwavering determination to seek knowledge propelled him to become the second African American to earn a Ph.D. in history from Harvard University.
📚In 1926, Woodson initiated ‘Negro History Week,’ which later evolved into the now widely recognized ‘Black History Month.’
📚Woodson’s commitment to education led him to establish the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, now known as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH).
📚His groundbreaking book, ‘The Mis-Education of the Negro,’ remains a powerful critique of the educational system’s failure to acknowledge the contributions of Black Americans.

As we honor Carter G. Woodson’s memory, we are reminded of his remarkable contributions to education, history, and social progress.

Posted @withregram • @nmaahc #OnThisDay in 1915, Posted @withregram • @nmaahc #OnThisDay in 1915, Carter G. Woodson founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in Chicago, Illinois. The organization promoted, researched, preserved, interpreted, and disseminated information about Black life, history, and culture.

@asalh_bhm continues to instill pride and dignity in African Americans by charting past and current triumphs and community achievements. Under Woodson’s pioneering leadership, the Association created research and publication platforms for Black scholars including the Journal of Negro History in 1916.

10 years later, in 1926, Woodson initiated the celebration of “Negro History Week,” as an Association outreach program for Black people of all ages. It coincided with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, and in 1976, expanded to include the entire month of February as #BlackHistoryMonth.

“Having ASALH in Florida was a defining moment to upholding intellectual freedom,” said Paul Ortiz, a history professor at the University of Florida who attended the conference. He was very vocal about ASALH coming to Florida because the people fighting against DeSantis’ policies need allies and “ASALH represents the alternative for that. Let’s come clean on the history of inequality.” Miami HeraldRead more at: ... See MoreSee Less
