Once again, the Alliance is helping the National Park Service with plans for the annual commemoration of the Battle of Fort Stevens, this year to be held on Saturday, July 11, 2020, from 10 am to 4 pm. Please look at the photos on our website from last year’s commemoration: www.dccivilwarforts.org
This year, we are reaching out to our list of Civil War friends to invite those of you who are interested in participating as a reenactor and/or speaker. Attached is last year’s program, to give you ideas. Here are the opportunities:
- Reenactors – We seek people who can portray, in costume, both military and civilian people of the Civil War era, especially in and around the nation’s capital. We want diversity in ages, races, gender, and subject matter. Those who have participated in the past are welcomed again.
- Speakers – There are 6 to 8 sessions of about a half hour each in the afternoon. We like to combine speakers – usually 2 each with a moderator/introducer. Topics do not have to focus on the Battle of Fort Stevens, although we always have one session for that. We continue to reflect the National Park Service’s theme for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War: “Civil War to Civil Rights.” Those who have spoken in the past are welcomed again.
In both cases, we don’t need a lengthy proposal. By Monday, March 16, send your name and brief explanation of what you would like to do and your expertise in doing it. We will share the information with the National Park Service staff, who make the final determinations. Then for those who are selected, we’ll discuss it with you.
