Scholarly Communication & Copyright Librarian
University of California, Berkeley
Hiring Range: Associate Librarian to Librarian, $71,427 to $86,204 based upon qualifications.
This is a full-time appointment available beginning April 2019.

The Library of the University of California, Berkeley seeks a creative, collaborative, and diligent individual to join a growing team of educators and service providers supporting UC Berkeley faculty, researchers, students, and staff with needs related to scholarly communication, copyright, and research-related information policy matters.


The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally renowned research and teaching facility at the nation’s premier public university. A highly diverse and intellectually rich environment, Berkeley serves a campus community of approximately 30,600 undergraduate students, 11,600 graduate students, and 1,525 faculty. The Library comprises 20 campus libraries, including the Doe/Moffitt Libraries, The Bancroft Library, the C.V. Starr East Asian Library, and numerous subject specialty libraries. With a collection of more than 12 million volumes and a collections budget of over $15 million, the Library offers extensive collections in all formats and robust services to connect users with the collections and build their research skills.

The Library’s Office of Scholarly Communication Services, established in 2016 and led by the Scholarly Communication Officer, helps scholars use, create, and publish scholarly information by providing guidance and support throughout the knowledge lifecycle. The program provides services that promote the open dissemination, discoverability, accessibility, and preservation of scholarly resources—while helping scholars navigate and maximize their impact in the changing scholarly publishing landscape.


Reporting to the University Library’s Scholarly Communication Officer, the Scholarly Communication & Copyright Librarian will bear the following essential job duties:

• Serve as Library’s leading consultant with faculty, researchers, and students regarding scholarly communication and copyright-related research needs;

• Support faculty, staff, and students with services, outreach, and instruction related to scholarly communication and publishing, including:copyright fair use and permissions; author rights; text & data mining; data publishing and licensing; information policy; research impact; institutional repositories and scholarly publishing platforms; and open educational resources (OERs);

• Help coordinate and lead Library efforts to develop and promote copyright education programs and copyright best practices among faculty, researchers, and students;

• Advise UC Berkeley faculty, staff, and students on submission of works to the UC system’s repository,, and compliance with federal or funder access mandates;

• Serve as a Library and campus resource on issues related to open access scholarship and affordable course content or OERs, and conducts outreach and educational programming on these topics;

• Work with liaisons/subject librarians to develop educational materials and provide relevant outreach and programming to increase awareness about scholarly communication issues;

• Organize reporting efforts, and contributes to developing strategic directions for Office of Scholarly Communication Services;

• Monitor and reports on trends, legal requirements, and best practices regarding scholarly communication, public access to research, copyright-related scholarly publishing issues, and OERs;

• Participate in the Library’s Scholarly Communication Expertise Group and relevant Library- or campus-wide entities; and Contribute to the Office of Scholarly Communication Services’ web presence, tools, and materials.

Minimum Basic Qualification Required at Date of Application:

Advanced degree.

Additional Required Qualifications at Start Date in Position:
• At least one year of experience supporting copyright, licensing, and other IP matters within an academic environment; or at least one year of experience with scholarly publishing, including open access publishing, academic publishing platforms, and licensing and business models;
• At least one year of experience providing reference and/or instructional services about scholarly communication or copyright issues;
• At least one year of experience engaging in collaborative projects and programs at the local, regional, national, and/or international level;

Additional Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated commitment to providing public service, and ability to work with diverse staff and campus user communities.
• Juris Doctor, or at least one year of experience providing copyright or licensing services and guidance in an academic setting;
• Master’s degree from an American Library Association accredited institution or equivalent international degree
• At least one year of experience developing innovative services to enhance research and/or teaching;
• At least one year of experience as a librarian in an academic library;
• Demonstrated analytical, organizational, problem solving, and interpersonal skills;
• Demonstrated oral and written communication skills;
• Capacity to thrive in a dynamic environment, respond to shifting needs and priorities of library constituents, and a willingness to be flexible with assignments.
