Positions are located in one of the following offices:

Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment (E), develops and implement international policies related to economic growth, energy, agriculture, the ocean, the environment, and science and technology.

Office of the Under Secretary for Management (M), Office of White House Liaison (M\WHL), bureaus and offices report to the Under Secretary for Management are responsible for management improvement initiatives; security; the Department’s information technology infrastructure; support services for domestic and overseas operations; consular affairs; and personnel matters, including retirement programs, recruitment, career development, training, and medical services.

Deputy Secretary (D), serves as the principal deputy, adviser, serves as Acting Secretary of State in the Secretary’s absence; and assists the Secretary in the formulation and conduct of U.S. foreign policy and in giving general supervision and direction to all elements of the Department.

Office of the Secretary of State, The Executive Office (S\ES-EX) provides management support and a complete range of administrative services for the Secretary, Deputy Secretaries, Under Secretaries, and their staff offices which comprise the S area. This office provides logistical support for official travel by the Secretary and other Department principals .

As an Student Trainee (Office Automation) GS-01, you will:

Perform simple office automation duties using such software applications as electronic mail, desktop publishing, calendar, spreadsheet, database, and/or graphics, to track Congressional correspondence. Perform electronic file maintenance work including: updating and maintaining computer files and inventory; making backup copies; establishing and maintaining a uniform identification and archive library system; updating and maintaining all manuals, references books, and operating handbooks, and guidelines; maintaining appointments, calendars, schedules; schedules appointments, coordinates meetings, and/or schedules conferences.

Operate a word processor or electric typewriter, to prepare a variety of narrative and tabular material (e.g. correspondence, reports, technical papers, charts, statistical tables, manuals, travel orders, messages and other documents) involving the common terminology of the office for which the work is done and requiring accuracy in spelling, grammar, and syllabication. Work is either performed in draft or final form. Refer to technical dictionaries, textbook research reports, or similar material as reference tools to facilitate assignments. Assure the propriety of formats, spacing, arrangements, and preparation of typed material in final form as prescribed by style manuals.
