Hosted by Heather-Marie Montilla, this PBS Books Author Talk delves into Dr. Berry’s research on southern supreme court cases, revealing how white supremacist legal practices harmed formerly enslaved families and their descendants. Through her work, she challenges us to foster empathy and understanding for marginalized communities today. As a labor organizer, he worked closely with A. Philip Randolph to advance economic justice for Black workers, playing a crucial role in the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters' fight for fair wages and union recognition. Rustin believed that the labor movement and the struggle for racial equality were deeply intertwined, advocating for policies that uplifted both Black and working-class communities. His expertise in nonviolent protest and coalition-building helped shape the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, which not only called for civil rights but also demanded economic justice, including a higher minimum wage and employment protections. Mary McLeod Bethune (1875-1955) was a trailblazing Mary McLeod Bethune (1875-1955) was a trailblazing educator, activist, and leader who served as the president of ASALH from 1936 to 1951. As an educator, she founded the Daytona Normal and Industrial Institute for Negro Girls, which eventually became Bethune-Cookman University, providing education to young Black women and empowering them to pursue careers in various fields. She was a trusted advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, serving as the director of the Division of Negro Affairs within the National Youth Administration, where she worked to secure opportunities for Black youth. Bethune was a prominent figure in the struggle for racial equality, advocating for policies that addressed the economic and social needs of African Americans. Her leadership in ASALH helped solidify the organization's mission to promote African American history and culture, ensuring that Black contributions were recognized and celebrated in American history. Since 1998, the WNBPA has been breaking barriers as the first labor union for professional women athletes, championing equity, empowerment, and change. Stay tuned as we explore the impact of Black women in labor, sports, and beyond! First up: Nneka Ogwumike—the 1st overall pick in the 2012 WNBA Draft, WNBA MVP, WNBA Champion, 9x WNBA All Star! A leader on and off the court, Nneka is on a mission to inspire with integrity, courage, and compassion. As President of the WNBPA, she played a key role in renegotiating the WNBA’s groundbreaking 2020 Collective Bargaining Agreement, advocating for equality, women’s empowerment, and health.
