Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate and guide the department’s review and development of its curriculum
  • Provide support to the members of the department, according to their needs, in areas regarding curriculum development, scholarly interests, teaching strategies, collegial relations, evaluation and counseling of students, including questions of academic integrity
  • Schedule and chair meetings of the department at appropriate intervals to discuss curriculum, professional development opportunities, and departmental and school matters
  • Meet with department members on an individual basis to facilitate personal and departmental business, including obligations, evaluation and professional development
  • Assign teaching duties in consultation with the members of the department and the Assistant Head of School for Academic Life
  • Oversee departmental business, including book ordering, record-keeping, assignment of coverage, departmental review and other duties as necessary to the needs of the discipline
  • Screen candidates, set up interviews with the department, and consult with the Assistant Head of School for Academic Life and members of the department on the hiring of new faculty
  • Work closely with new teachers and teachers taking on new responsibilities
  • Evaluate department members in accordance with the school’s evaluation process
  • Attend meetings of the Academic Affairs Committee, and serve as liaison between the department and the Committee
  • Represent the opinions of the department to the school leadership and to the larger community
  • Communicate the imperatives of the school to members of the department
  • Teach three classes
