The Department of History in the College of Arts and Sciences at Loyola University Chicago (LUC) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of History with a research and teaching specialty in Digital Public History.

The Department defines Digital History and Public History broadly, and this position is open to historians who have demonstrated a commitment to using digital methods to develop scholarship and to using digital modes to present history to broad audiences.  Subject matter and geographic fields are open.

As an urban-based Department of History dedicated to mentoring a diverse student body, many of whom come from under-represented and under-served populations, we especially encourage applications from candidates from under-represented groups. We also encourage applications from scholars committed to interdisciplinarity (i.e., working with colleagues across different subfields and disciplines) and the successful pursuit of external grants.

The successful candidate will be joining a department with 29 full-time faculty members, over 200 majors and minors, and MA and PhD programs in History and Public History.  Loyola’s Public History Program has been a national leader in the field for decades, recently winning the Founders Award from the National Council on Public History.  Further, opportunities exist to collaborate closely with Loyola’s Center for Textual Studies and Digital Humanities. The successful candidate will teach graduate and upper-level undergraduate courses in the fields of digital humanities and digital public history, as well as broader surveys in the Loyola University core curriculum.  Teaching expectations generally involve two courses per semester for research-intensive faculty.  The successful candidate is expected to pursue a strong research and publication program, including the pursuit of external grants.  Finally, the successful candidate will participate in service to enhance the Public History program, the Department, places like the Center for Textual Studies and Digital Humanities, and the professional discipline as a whole.

The candidate will have a Ph.D. in History by August 31, 2022. Candidates for the position must clearly demonstrate the potential for excellence in research and teaching and have a record of (or clear potential for) distinguished scholarship, grant-funded research, and student mentorship.The candidate should be willing to support the mission of LUC and the goals of a Jesuit Catholic Education.
