Black theology, or black liberation theology, refers to a theological perspective which originated among African-American seminarians and scholars, and in some black churches in the United States and later in other parts of the world. It contextualizes Christianity in an attempt to help those of African descent overcome oppression. It especially focuses on the injustices committed against African Americans and black South Africans during American segregation and apartheid.

A lecture (The call) followed by a virtual roundtable discussion (The response) providing commentary and critical analysis. Q & A from audience is also part of the response. “The Close or benediction will conclude the formal part of session, followed by musical renditions. Participants will include Dr. John Kinney, Virginia Union University, Samuel Dewitt Proctor School of Theology; Yolanda Pierce, Howard University; Dr. Terrence L. Title: Black Lives Matter and Music: Protest, Int Title: Black Lives Matter and Music: Protest, Intervention, Reflection
  Time: 6:30- 8:00 p.m. (EST)
Date: Tuesday, February 7, 2023
Description:
The panel highlighting some of the contributors to the book Black Lives Matter & Music: Protest, Intervention, Reflection, who will lead a vibrant discussion on the power of Black music in the struggle for freedom and liberation, including John Fleming, past President of ASALH, and Portia Maultsby, noted ethnomusicologist of Indiana University.

Panelists will explore how music has served as a source of inspiration for African Americans’ struggle for freedom from the antebellum period, through the Civil Rights Movement, and into the present day as manifested through the Black Lives Movement.

Music was used to inspire, to sustain spirits, to empower, and to galvanize communities in to social action. From the earliest history of African Americans' presence in the U.S., music has served as a palatable means to convey covert messages of oppression without being easily interpreted by the oppressor. The scholarly panel will also discuss their ethnographic research and draw from their personal encounters to illustrate how music over time can uncover the social, economic, political, scientific, and other forms of injustices in our society. The discussants will provide a snapshot into how African American musical genres have flourished in different cities and how music has inspired local activism across the U. S. sponsored by ASALH: Association for the Study of African American Life and History.
