March 2022 marks the 200th Anniversary of the birth of Harriet Tubman, known as one of the principal “conductors” of the Underground Railroad. Tubman is also arguably our nation’s most famous abolitionist, was a spy for the Union Army, and an important suffragist in the decades preceding the 19th Amendment.

Our speaker for this program is Dr. Cheryl Janifer LaRoche, who will discuss her more than twenty years of work to preserve the story and legacy of Harriet Tubman. At the University of Maryland, Dr. LaRoche’s expertise is to combine history, geography, archaeology, and material culture with landscapes, to produce a more fully realized narrative of the African American experience.
