Art Blakey, a legendary jazz drummer and bandleader, was a pivotal figure in the development of modern jazz. Born in Pittsburgh, Blakey's influence extended beyond music; he played a significant role in Black history by mentoring and fostering generations of jazz musicians, helping to shape the cultural landscape of the 20th century. His band, the Jazz Messengers, became an incubator for some of the greatest talents in jazz, and his contributions remain a source of pride for Pittsburgh. As the city prepares to host the upcoming ASALH conference, Blakey's legacy serves as a reminder of Pittsburgh's rich cultural heritage and its ongoing impact on Black history.

On August 6, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law, a monumental victory for the Black community. This landmark legislation banned the use of literacy tests, which had long been used to disenfranchise Black voters. It also empowered federal examiners to review voter qualifications and federal observers to monitor polling places, ensuring fair voting practices and significantly increasing voter registration and participation among African Americans.

The Crawford Grill, located in Pittsburgh's Hill District, was a cornerstone of the jazz scene from the 1930s through the 1950s. Founded in 1930 by William “Gus” Greenlee, the club became a beacon of cultural integration and musical excellence, attracting legends like Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, and Miles Davis. Despite the racial segregation of the era, the Grill welcomed patrons of all ethnicities, fostering a vibrant community united by a shared love for jazz. This historic venue will be featured in the upcoming ASALH conference in Pittsburgh, with bus tours highlighting its significant contribution to both Black history and the city's rich cultural heritage. Visitors can also explore a recreation of the Crawford Grill at the Heinz History Center's long-term exhibition, "Pittsburgh: A Tradition of Innovation."

Despite its vibrant history, the Crawford Grill faced challenges in the 1950s, leading to its eventual closure in 1955. The decline was attributed to changing musical tastes and economic shifts in Pittsburgh's Hill District. Despite its closure, the Crawford Grill remains deeply significant to the community. It served as more than just a jazz venue; it was a cultural hub where people of all backgrounds came together to enjoy music and camaraderie during a time of racial segregation. Its legacy endures through recognition by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and its inclusion in exhibitions at the Heinz History Center, ensuring that its impact on Black history and Pittsburgh's cultural fabric is remembered and celebrated.

Thaddeus Gilmore Mosley, born on July 23, 1926, in New Castle, Pennsylvania, is a prominent African American sculptor pivotal to Pittsburgh's cultural history. After serving in the U.S. Navy and graduating from the University of Pittsburgh in 1950, Mosley worked for the U.S. Postal Service while freelancing for The Pittsburgh Courier. He began sculpting in the 1950s, with his first solo exhibit at the Carnegie Museum of Art in 1968. Notable works include the "14’ cedar Phoenix" and the "Mountaintop" Limestone in Pittsburgh’s Hill District. Mosley, author of *Thaddeus Mosley: African-American Sculptor*, has received numerous awards and served as an officer for the Pittsburgh Society of Sculptors and a board member of the August Wilson Center for African American Culture, solidifying his impact on Pittsburgh's history.
