Frederick Douglass’s speech “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?” continues to challenge and resonate with audiences, considering the meaning of “liberty and justice for all”. This year, celebrate American Independence with us on July 5 at Frederick Douglass National Historic Site. Dive deep into history, touring the grounds of Cedar Hill, watching a performance by the winners of the annual Douglass Oratorical Contest, and participating in a full public reading of Douglass’s famed speech.
