The Association for the Study of African American Life & History was founded by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the Father of #BlackHistoryMonth.
Fannie Lou Hamer was a courageous civil rights lea Fannie Lou Hamer was a courageous civil rights leader and voting rights activist who became a powerful voice for racial equality in the 1960s. Born in Mississippi, Hamer dedicated her life to challenging systemic racism and empowering African Americans to exercise their right to vote. She co-founded the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party in 1964 to challenge the all-white delegation at the Democratic National Convention, gaining national attention for her testimony about voter suppression and racial violence. Hamer’s activism extended to economic justice as she worked to combat poverty in the Black community through initiatives like the Freedom Farm Cooperative. Her unwavering courage and determination made her an enduring symbol of grassroots activism and the fight for justice. #AfricanAmericansandLabor #ASALH #FannieLouHamer

We will keep rising, we will keep going forward, and we will continue to be the hope and the dream of our ancestors.” - Karsonya Wise Whitehead Karsonya Wise Whitehead, a trailblazing academic and advocate, is the newly elected President of ASALH. As a Professor of Communication and African and African American Studies at Loyola University Maryland and the founding Executive Director of the Karson Institute for Race, Peace, & Social Justice, Dr. Whitehead brings a wealth of experience and passion to her role. Known for her award-winning work as a radio host and editorial columnist, she has dedicated her career to amplifying Black history and culture. As ASALH President, Dr. Whitehead is committed to advancing Dr. Carter G. Woodson's vision, positioning ASALH as a leading voice for the Black community through education, activism, and innovative outreach.

In 1868, he founded the Colored Caulkers Trade Union Society, organizing Black workers to secure fair wages and workplace protections. A year later, he established the Colored National Labor Union (CNLU), serving as its first president and uniting Black workers to demand economic justice in a racially divided labor market. His efforts not only empowered African American laborers but also inspired the broader fight for equality, with Frederick Douglass succeeding him as CNLU president in 1872. #AfricanAmericansandLabor #ASALH #IsaacMyers

This meeting marked a significant step in uniting advocates of justice and equality under the principles of nonviolence. Discussions focused on empowering African Americans to challenge systemic oppression through peaceful protests and grassroots organizing. The gathering ultimately led to the formation of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), an influential organization that would play a central role in the civil rights movement, shaping the course of history in the fight for justice and social change.
