EMMY Award-winning “Your Democracy” series earns its second major accolade in 2024.

Chicago, IL – June 26, 2024 – The American Bar Association (ABA) has announced that YourDemocracy, the educational series written by and featuring Gloria J. Browne-Marshall, has been selected to receive the prestigious Silver Gavel Award. Your Democracy is an animated series on the U.S. Constitution that has captivated nearly a half million viewers worldwide, reaching audiences in 11 countries, including Vietnam, Ukraine, Russia, the Philippines, Sweden, France, and Germany. The series makes this nation’s foundational document accessible and engaging to diverse audiences of all ages. It won the Silver Gavel Award in the multimedia category.

Browne-Marshall is the EMMY Award-winning voice behind Your Democracy which is produced and broadcast by WHYY, a Philadelphia based PBS/NPR affiliate. She brings her expertise as a social justice attorney, constitutional law professor, playwright, filmmaker, and award-winning author to bring the Constitution to life. She is the founder/director of The Law and Policy Group, Inc. Throughout her illustrious career which spans academia, law, nonprofit work, and media, Browne-Marshall has significantly contributed to public discourse on civil liberties, criminal justice, and equality under law.

Browne-Marshall is a much sought after news guest appearing frequently on CNN, MSNBC and other media outlets including France24, the BBC, and CNN International. About Gloria J. Browne-Marshall

Gloria J. Browne-Marshall is a tenured full Professor of Constitutional Law and Africana Studies at John Jay College (CUNY), writer, and an accomplished civil rights attorney. In 2025, her forthcoming book A Protest History of the United States will be published by Beacon Press. She is the author of She Took Justice: The Black Woman, Law, and Power 1619 to 1969, Race, Law, and American Society: 1607 to Present, The Voting Rights War: The NAACP and the Ongoing Struggle for Justice, and the U.S. Constitution: An African American Context, among others. Her documentary film Before 1619: She Took Justice based on her trips to Angola to research Queen Nzingha is currently competing in film festivals.

Her play Dreams of Emmett Till made into the uniquely created film directed by Bobby Field, won the American Film Award. Gloria is the producer/host of Law of the Land a weekly radio show and podcast and a sought-after speaker on issues of constitutional law social justice, literature and law as well as gendered justice. Her 2022 Institute of Politics fellowship at the Harvard Kennedy School focused on Creativity, Activism, and Politics led to creation of the course “Literature, Race, and Law at John Jay College. Browne-Marshall’s legal background includes clerkships at the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, litigation with Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), Community Legal Services in Philadelphia, and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Inc. Her work has earned her numerous accolades, cementing her reputation as an international leader on social justice issues.
