The school was founded by John Berry Meachum and provided an education for hundreds of free and enslaved Black students in the St. Louis area. #BlackResistance

#BHM: John Berry Meachum was the founder of the First African Baptist Church in St. Louis, the oldest black church, west of the Mississippi River.

At a time when it was illegal in the city to teach blacks to read and write, he operated a school in the church's basement. #BlackResistance
