Mae Jemison, an astronaut, physician, and engineer Mae Jemison, an astronaut, physician, and engineer, has made groundbreaking contributions not only in science and space exploration but also in advocating for education, diversity, and labor rights. As the first African American woman to travel into space, Jemison's achievements have inspired many to break barriers in fields historically dominated by men and people of other races. Her commitment to excellence extends beyond her own career as she actively works to encourage young people, particularly those from underrepresented communities, to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Jemison’s efforts in these fields intersect with labor movements by promoting equitable access to opportunities in industries that require skilled labor, encouraging workers of all backgrounds to enter the workforce and advance within their fields. Jemison’s connection to the labor movement lies in her broader advocacy for social justice and the importance of inclusive work environments. As part of her mission to improve representation and equality in STEM careers, she addresses the systemic barriers that many workers face due to race, gender, and socioeconomic status. The Six Triple Eight, officially known as the 6888 The Six Triple Eight, officially known as the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, was the only all-Black, all-female battalion to serve overseas during World War II. Established in 1945, they were tasked with sorting and delivering millions of pieces of mail that had been delayed due to the war, ensuring that letters and packages reached soldiers on the front lines. The battalion, which faced racial and gender discrimination, became an enduring symbol of resilience, breaking barriers for African American women in the military and contributing significantly to the war effort. Their successful completion of the mission, despite the many obstacles they faced, played a pivotal role in boosting morale among soldiers and exemplified the critical role of women of color in wartime labor. The contributions of the Six Triple Eight to the labor movement extend beyond their military service. By defying the gender and racial norms of the time, the battalion not only demonstrated the capabilities of Black women in a professional and technical capacity but also helped shift public perception about their roles in the workforce. Their efforts laid the groundwork for future generations of Black women to enter more diverse fields, particularly in roles traditionally dominated by white men. This month, we proudly feature Carla Stalling Walt This month, we proudly feature Carla Stalling Walter, a distinguished author, scholar, and advocate for the transformative power of dance. Carla’s most recent publication, Sacred Dance Meditations: 365 Globally Inspired Movement Practices Enhancing Awakening, Clarity and Connection, is an inspirational daily reader that taps into the healing powers of dance. Each entry offers a movement practice that promotes spiritual awakening, mental clarity, and deeper connection to oneself and the world. Carla’s passion for writing began at the age of 8, driven by her desire to help others through her stories. She has a rich academic background, having earned both a PhD and BA from the University of California and an MBA from California State University. In 2022, Carla served as the Martha Daniel Newell Visiting Scholar at Georgia College and State University. She’s held faculty positions and leadership roles across public and private institutions, from dean to chancellor. As a writer, Carla was a member of The Writer’s Clubs in California and the San Francisco Writer’s Grotto, where she also served as board chair. She has lectured on writing and publishing at esteemed organizations such as the Atlanta Writer’s Club, the San Diego Writers Ink, and the Georgia Writers Museum.
