Do you know a historic Black Church that needs funding to strengthen its capital, staffing, or operations? They may be eligible for a Preserving Black Churches grant of $50,000 – $500,000.

These funds support historic Black houses of worship (with active congregations or those repurposed for new uses in local communities) and advance ongoing preservation activities including capital projects, endowment and financial sustainability, programming and interpretation, and organizational capacity-building.

Since our nation was founded, Black Churches have been a beacon of hope, safety and advocacy.

As the oldest institutions created and controlled by African Americans, they are a living testament to the achievements and resiliency of generations of Black people and culture.

Yet today, historic Black Churches across the U.S. are facing mounting threats including deferred maintenance, insufficient funds, and even demolition.

Recognizing these urgent challenges, the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund created the Preserving Black Churches program in 2023.

This $60 million initiative is backed by generous support from Lilly Endowment Inc. and provides critical preservation support to ensure these churches remain pillars of their communities for decades to come.
